A set of six hand-painted side chairs in the Hitchcock tradition, featuring Sheraton-style turned legs, rush seats, and stenciled crest rails. The warm ochre-painted finish is a rarer variation, lending rich character and folk appeal. Gilt stencilwork adds decorative charm to the backrests and seat rails.
Made in New England circa 1840s–1860s, this set reflects the popularity of Hitchcock’s influence and the individuality of regional craftsmanship. One chair shows a slight variation in leg turning, likely a period replacement or the product of small-batch handwork—common for the era and not detracting from the overall appeal.
