Antique, handmade, marbled glazed terracotta canister originally used for preserving foods such as artichokes, eggplants, peppers or anchovies in olive oil or brine. This one is a rare find due to its darker brown glaze. Lids were often broken from use over the years. Linen cloths tied with twine around the rim of the canister or a wooden top was used in its place.
Found in Grottaglie, Puglia. Circa early 1900's
