A unique 1857 New York City map published by Humphrey Phelps, showing Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City and Hoboken. Engraved in exquisite detail with a full street index, ward boundaries, and decorative maritime engravings of steamships and sailing vessels.
Dated before the completion of Central Park, this map offers a remarkable view of New York on the eve of a transformative period in its growth. Central Park was authorized by the state in 1853 and the winning design by Olmstead & Vaux, titled "Greensward Plan" was chosen in 1857-1858. Construction began in 1858.
Original fold wear and toning/fading are present and cosistent with age. Framed in a figured burlwood frame.

CONDITION NOTES: Map shows signifivant wear at fold lines. Overall fading present. Back of frame was replaced with cardboard backing. Map has wonderful patina and shows beautifully.
