A bit about the designer:
Born in Brooklyn NY in 1922, Harvey Probber is recognized as a popular mid-century modern furniture designer that helped introduce Americans to sectionals and modular seating in the 1940s. Unlike many other designers of the era who were trained architects and industrial designers, Harvey took night classes in design at the Pratt Institute but largely learned on the job at the Trade Upholstery.
After the war Harvey took his understanding of design, with the increased buying power of Americans and the growing interest in modernism, he opened his company Harvey Probber Inc. in 1945. His designs exemplified modern design principles of clean lines but Probber loved using exotic, beautiful materials to give his work an added beauty.
Probber described that he sought to design furniture with “the quality of aging gracefully.”
